InfoPath Success and more from the weekend

It looks like I will need to upload a spreadsheet form into a library and when this happens a custom workflow will start. I was able to publish an InfoPath form into our SharePoint at work however the admins here do not allow us to use the Browser for filling out the form. Perfect time to seriously get into creating custom workflows in SharePoint Designer 2013. I will try to get the admins to allow forms in the browser but if I fight too much I might lose the software I currently have on my computer.

SharePoint:

I was incorrect last week when I said I was able to publish an InfoPath form to my SharePoint site after waiting overnight. Going back to last week I actually thought I was opening up the form in a browser but in fact it was opening up in InfoPath. When I closed InfoPath down at tried opening up the form in the browser on Friday there was no luck. I headed back to Google and ultimatly found an obscure post with a simple fix. All I had to do was allow ‘Management of content type’ in the library settings ‘Advanced Settings’ section and it worked perfectly. I was also able to set this feature in SharePoint Designer 2013 with a click and save. No waiting over night, save and your are done. Tested this on my Surface Pro 3m that does not have InfoPath installed and it worked like a charm.

I tried this little trick at work but it looks like I still need to go the excel form and custom workflow route. This is not a bad thing as it allows me more opportunity to learn new things broadening my skill base for writing the help books I am looking forward to.

Unity, C#, Python and Blender

Sent in the reviews for Chapters four and six. Started setting up the Character Customization scene and it is looking pretty darn good as of this morning. The scene is simple, the code behind the customization and UI is what will be challenging.

This last weekend:

I said this last weekend would be spectacular and it was. Everything worked out perfect from cooking, controlling my eating and drinking and sleeping. Such a great weekend should run right into a fantastic week. So far so good. See ya all next week.

Next weekend will be even better.

Started back with Lynda.com the last couple of weeks and I had forgotten how good those lessons are. Gini Couter {sp} is a great instructor for SharePoint and SharePoint Designer 2013.

SharePoint Online

Our company is migrating their SharePoint sites to the new (new to us) SharePoint Online. I was nominated by my supervisor to be the site owner for our group. I have been waiting for the testing to begin and have been a little anxious because I have never worked in SharePoint, designed any apps or organized pages. I purchased a ‘For Dummies’ book and after reading half a chapter I signed up for a single license of SharePoint Online. Doing this I will be able to experiment with different site designs and functions before I deploy to the team site. I get to create my own SharePoint site, learn new things and have fun all at the same time. As of last night my thoughts on the additional responsibilities went from anxious to very excited.

Thinking of adding JavaScript

After going through some videos about the most popular languages and bouncing that list off of what I am currently studying, those being VBA, C# and Python it looks like I am missing the most important one and that is JavaScript. Each and every website, book, article and even YouTube videos sited JavaScript as the number one language to have on your plate of languages. I guess that means adding this to the list and finding an IDE to use. I typed that without looking and I can use Visual Studio for JavaScript as well as C#. I can use the same IDE for Python but prefer to use IntelliJ for working with Python.

My list of Languages in alphabetical order
C#
JavaScript
Python
VBA

The VBA is for Excel/Word/Outlook macros and not necessarily for full blown applications. I may at a point in time add VBA.net to the work, for now I’ll stick with those four.

Do you every wonder why there needs to be so many languages? Why couldn’t one language just evolve to be a representative of what we do today. Back in the day me and Glenn used Basic and it was more than adequate for what we were doing or what anybody would want to do back then or now. You could have easily created key words for Fortran functions or Cobol functions etc. without creating a completely new language, just my opinion mind you.

Back to JavaScript, it just happened when I logged onto Udemy.com and searched for JavaScript courses I was given a plethora of courses I could take for free. I have never seen a course on Udemy for free since I started enrolling in courses with them. The first I am taking is JavaScript Essentials. The course is comprised of 41 lectures at 8.5 hrs. I have watched nine lectures and am very impressed with this instructors approach to teaching.

I was wrong about liking when Angie is quiet

The last statement I made last week about Angie is the fact she has been quiet and that means she doesn’t cost me as much money. Well the fact of the matter is I don’t like it when she doesn’t talk. She said she is really busy but so am I and I still find the time to at least say good morning.

What did piss me off this weekend was the fact I still have to wait six freaking months even though she said if I helped with the rent it would not be six months. I guess that was 1) a lie or 2) she misspoke. One thing I do know is I did not misunderstand. I’ll give her her six months, remain quiet, save my money but after that the divorce must happen or the rent will stop.

I am taking Mosh’s intermediate C# class again and enjoy it as much this time as I did the last time.

Another Udemy Class Complete

I finished the Python Bible class from Udemy this last week and now am back onto a VBA class. This will be a little difficult because the instructor is very hard to understand. Each of the lectures seem to be around 12 minutes long and there are over 200 of them but the report automation portion I am really looking forward to.

I have found a new favorite company which will challenge my exercise and diet. The company is Grubhub. They pick up and deliver food to your doorstep from many restaurants that don’t normally deliver like one of my favorites, Red Robin and I took advantage of it this last weekend. I also tried a new Chinese delivery and a restaurant I have always wanted to try, On the Border. The Chinese restaurant was pretty dang good and I got 3 10.00 coupons from them but On the Border wasn’t as good as I thought (the chips and dip were though). This can really destroy my diet if I don’t watch out though. One new restaurant per weekend, I think that will work.

Angie is doing good but being really quiet right now which I like. She is cheaper that way 🙂

And the new year starts

What is up for this new year.

Number one on the list has to be lose the weight I gained which is to say get in shape and continue to do so as I was when I was in physical therapy after my heart attach. To do this I order a Peloton spin bike at 2400.00 this is an expensive gift to myself but on that I will enjoy. I enjoyed the stationary bike at therapy and have been complaining none of the weight rooms I have at the apartment or the hotel had them.

Number two will be the Project Management Professional certificate my boss mentioned late last year. If he meant it great I’ll do It as I have signed up for a course at Udemy for the same. If now I’ll still take the Udemy course then practice tests, then the real deal.

Number three is the book… I’m not sure of that direction as it has changed very much over the last year but I’ll set my direction and move forward.

Last but not least is the continued pursuit of Blender modeling, Unity Game creating and C#/Python programing. All of these last items I enjoy very much but have limited time to practice.

I think all of these can be accomplished this year with the first one a must if I want to go back to Seattle next Christmas.

Udemy Course: Becoming a Writer: part Deux

This will be the second installment of exercises I have done during this course.

Udemy Course Exercise 4: Finding the Good

I decided to pick a person I worked with at a company a few years ago.

This person was very good at presenting our company in a good light. Creating fantastic presentation with power point although a little long at time.

I believe this person to be a very religious person possibly mores so than I at the time I worked with him.

He was a fantastic father and spending much time with his son whom I know he loved very much and acting as coach for his baseball team.

He was very good at politicking and trying to get that point across to me.

Udemy Course Exercise 5: Processes

Getting Computer ready at home after work:
1) Take dock from day storage and plug in
2) set dock on table near the back with cord for computer to the right
3) Take computer out of day storage
4) Set computer on table, attach power cord from dock to the computer on the right side
5) Remove 128g memory stick and mouse from computer bag
6) Remove 1Tb hard drive from case and plug both into the dock, location optional
7) Open laptop computer and turn on.
8) Tap spacebar and bring up the password box.
9) Enter password, press enter.

… The computer is now ready to use for the entire night or weekend if it is Friday

Udemy Course Exercise 6: Principles

I’ll use creating an mBOm from Engineering as my example. The example of setting up my computer would not work in this exercise.
The three main principles in creating an accurate mBOM from an Engineering BOM would be.
1) Make sure you understand the build structure and what parts need to be created as subassemblies etc..

2) When signing off on the Engineering, upon seeing a group of parts that should or will be purchased together, have Engineering create an assembly rather than you creating a manufacturing parts.

3) Opposite of two, if there are assemblies that can not be purchased and installed as an assembly have Engineering eliminate that assembly and purchase the details without having to create phantom assemblies.

All of these exercises have been fun to do and at times very stressful because I don’t know if I am doing well or not. Does that matter? No it does not it us just my way of over analyzing everything I do. I did another random connection and here is that one.

Random Connection Part Deux

I felt a sense of sadness when I witnessed a physical offense against a nameless Hindu minding his own business at the airport this morning. I know it is a fantasy but some day this world will be free of such violence.

(I don’t recall exactly what the random words were (I think some were ‘Sadness, Hindu and fantasy’)

Udemy Course: Becoming a Writer

I have started this course through Udemy and have been doing the exercises as drafts here. I won’t release them as individual posts rather I will group them here.

Exercise One: Lists – Computers I have had in my life:

Gateway laptop
HP Pavilion
HP laptop
Microsoft Surface Book
Microsoft Surface Pro 3
Asus Gaming laptop
Alien ware
MacBook Pro 17″
MacBook Pro 13″
MacBook Air
TRS80 Model I
TRS80 Model III
IBM PC Jr.
Packard Bell
Toshiba laptop
HP tablet computer

This was a three minute writing exercise, letting my thoughts flow. I had to pick a topic and just create a list writing for three minutes only. I had forgotten about a few of these and I missed some as I look back on the list.

Exercise Two: Why? – Why I want to write three minutes

I want to write because I want to get my ideas out in public
I want to write because I would like to be a published author.
I want to write because I like to write and want to get better.
I want to write because I would like some residual income after I retire.
I want to write because it would be a great hobby when I retire as well as creating some income.
I want to write because I think I am good at is now.
I want to write because I want to get my opinion known.
I want to write because I would like people to read my blog posts and get something out of them.
I want to write because I love some of the things I do and would like to share those ideas.

Exercise Three: Random Connection -Words beach, foam, madness, athletes and portrait

I picked five words and given three minutes construct a sentence, paragraph.

Standing on the beach, my favorite beach on the island of Kauai watching the foam created by the breaking waves I’m thinking of the madness of it all. The surfers out, waiting for the waves show what athletes they are with the balance and vision to ride that perfect wave. Their eyes studying the horizon, watching the swells makes for a great portrait in my minds eye. With all that said, making a living as a screenwriter would me much more difficult than making aircraft. I’ll just lay back on the sand and contemplate my coworkers while on my vacation and smile.
